Times Higher Education has for the second time published a prestigious list of universities pursuing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set out in the 2030 Agenda, and therefore involved in solving the most important global problems of the modern world, such as poverty, social inequalities, insufficient access to knowledge, climate change or environmental devastation natural.
In THE Impact Rankings, published on April 22, 2020, the University of Gdańsk was rated very high in terms of its contribution to the implementation of Goal 14 "Life under water". In this category, the university was ranked 42nd out of 242 higher education institutions from around the world.
This undoubted success confirms the high position of the University of Gdańsk (which co-creates the European University of the Seas, SEA-EU) among universities conducting research and education related to maritime issues.
The University also noted a high position in the implementation of Objective 11. "Sustainable cities and communities" - ie the range 101-200 out of 470 universities assessed under this Objective. The contribution of universities to the efforts to eliminate the negative effects of rapid urbanization, improve resource efficiency, reduce pollution, access to basic services, energy, housing, transport and others to make cities safe, stable, sustainable and inclusive.
766 best universities from 85 countries, including 5 from Poland, participated in the global ranking taking into account all 17 Goals. The University of Gdańsk was classified in the range of 301-400. The University of Warsaw was in the same range. The AGH University of Science and Technology, Gdańsk University of Technology and Wrocław University of Technology were classified in the range of 401-600.
THE Impact Rankings reflects the current trend in the discussion of assessing the social and economic importance and impact of universities. In addition to the university's scientific and educational activity, the ranking also takes into account activities within the so-called the university's third mission and its socio-economic involvement. The very high position of the University of Gdańsk in this ranking confirms its strength in selected areas of scientific specialization, as well as the importance of research, education, and cooperation with the socio-economic environment for the development of the city of Gdańsk and the entire region.
